The control tower at JFK Airport Terminal 4 contacted us to replace their existing mylar shades with new motorized roller shades. With over 400,000 plan movements each year this was a project that needed to happen fast!
The tower’s windows faced south and canted outward on an angle. Without shading the controllers were essentially blinded by the sun and bright sky. As each shade was installed it has to be incorporated immediately into the control system. All work needed to be completed during one eight hour shift.
For these kinds of projects proven and reliable shade motors are a must. Wireless, internally controlled and digitally encoded motors were out of the question. We selected standard 4 wire motors since they routinely last over 25 years and are simple to diagnose. Controls needed to be in centralized panels for easy access and repairs.
Our motorized shades had to be biased cut on the sides to account for the angled corners and canted windows. The mylar film was a critical component in providing a safe and efficient working environment.
