Some projects require truly unique solution sets like our custom engineered Motorized Roller Shades. The architectural team responsible for the Greenwich Reform Synagogue had designed a spectacular sanctuary space with large window units that filled the entire southern façade. At first glance the project looked straight forward but soon took on some interesting twists and turns.

One of the requirements was to have all of the lower shade panels tapered to exactly follow the curve of the columns that framed the window openings. However, the columns were curved and a simple tapering cut would not have provided the desired effect. The shade cloth needed to be within ¼” of the columns along the entire run of the fabric. In addition we could not take advantage of the window framing to block light as there was none.

We wanted to take this opportunity to thank you for visiting our Bandalux Contract booth #1715 at the AIA conference in Orlando, Florida. The control tower at JFK Airport Terminal 4 contacted us to replace their existing mylar shades with new motorized roller shades. With over 400,000 plan movements each year this was a project that needed to happen fast!

We are proud to share a recent interior roller shade installation at the Brioni clothing store in Washington, DC in the Trump International Hotel lobby. Brioni had a need for privacy shades to enclose the all-glass wall store for customers trying on their fashionable clothes. These shades, manufactured by Bandalux Contract were over 13′ wide and 13″ high. 

Brioni is very well known and prestigious high end mens clothing store and we were more than thrilled to be brought onto the project to provide and install our motorized interior shades for their new store. Due to the size and limitations at the showroom, we ended up having to install when the store was closed overnight so as to not disturb their customers. “Engineered for Performance”

A few years ago, I coined the term Engineered Shading Solutions. This is defined as “…sustainable systems for interior and exterior window coverings, which engage the latest technologies to control heat, glare, and light”. While a great deal of the technologies are concerned with the hardware and control systems, the third leg of these engineered solutions are the fabrics. For it is the fabrics that actually control the heat, glare and light.

Engineered for Performance 
Solar shade fabrics are a good place to start with the challenge of controlling solar heat gain into a room. In winter, we want the shades raised to allow the solar radiation to heat up the cold spaces. In warmer months, the solar heat gain needs to be controlled.

Solar shade fabric fights solar heat gain on several fronts: openness of weave, color of the fabric, and innovative reflective material. Let’s start with openness. Solar shade fabrics are manufactured with a variety of openness, such as 3, 5, and 10 percent open. A 5 percent openness means that 95 percent of the cloth is closed. As you can imagine, the tighter the weave, the more solar heat gain protection the fabric provides. 

In choosing openness, the decision is influenced by the orientation of the windows. Northern-facing windows need the least protection (10 percent openness as suitable). For exposures with direct sunlight, 3 or 5 percent is required to effectively reduce solar heat gain.
