At InSync Solar we offer Engineered Shading Solutions. Our mission is to educate Architects as to the worthiness of these specialized products so they are considered during the design phase of a project and are not an afterthought. We define Engineered Shading Solutions as the following:
Engineered Shading Solutions are sustainable systems for interior and exterior window coverings which engage the latest technologies to control levels of solar heat gain, annoying glare and light.
A recent installation illustrates the process of an Engineered Shading Solution from the design stage to install. InSync Solar was contracted to create a specialized skylight system for a solarium in a luxurious town home on the upper east side of Manhattan. 
This automated system called for 10 skylight and 5 vertical shades. There were several
unique alterations we needed to engineer. Here are some highlights:
1) The aluminum enclosures needed to be small enough to fit flush with the windowmullions. To achieve this we had to modify the take up reels to a smaller diameter.
2) The vertical shades needed to function as a reverse roll to clear the handle obstruction.
3) The aluminum components which consists of the enclosures, hem bars and side tracks needed to be custom finished to match the solarium finish. This was done with the RAL color matching system most commonly used in Europe.
4) Since the client wanted no support bars in the skylight, we needed to add additional side channels and extra torque on the tension system.
5) InSync Solar designed a control system to integrate with the A/V system used in the town home.
The result as an effective a significant reduction of solar heat gain, allowing only a trace of glare and providing good visual transparency through the fabric. This qualifies as an Engineered Shading Solution.
