Interior Shades at JFK Airport Control Tower

We recently completed an interior shade installation at one of the JFK terminal airport tower centers. InSync Solar was brought in to replace the existing interior shades with our custom engineered interior mylar shades. interior shades

52 million passengers travel through JFK each year with over 400,000 plane movements on the runways. That is a demanding environment. The control tower is the nerve center of any airport and the professionals who work there need the best equipment available.

InSync Solar was approached by JFK-IAT to replace the aging and antiquated spring roller Mylar shades in their terminal control tower with a modern motorized shading network. As with all projects of this nature the budget was a primary factor in procurement. The bids received were generally over-priced and too vague to provide any comfort level to the airport staff.

During this uncertain phase InSync Solar stepped in and conferred with airport management to lay out a very specific plan with every element clearly defined. The motors needed to be robust with a long and reliable service life. The Mylar shade film needed to be FAA certified film made to very rigid specifications and not a generic film quoted by several bidders. The control topology needed to be laid out to provide maximum operator comfort and overall flexibility for future expansion. It also needed to work with zero down time.

After several months of design and engineering we presented our proposal for consideration. Much to the surprise of the client our costing model was almost half of our nearest competitor. Our comprehensive planning, budgeting, and cost control paid off for all parties involved in the project. The project was awarded to us and recently completed by our installation team.

tWith proper vendor phasing and a well thought our plan of attack we were able to install the entire system with almost no impact on the tower. It was impossible to tie up the space and the operators as this was a full time, high pressure operation. With the controls and wiring strategically pre-installed the actual installation of the shades was completed in one 8 hour shift. During the entire time the tower continued to safely move planes and people.

During the final testing of the shade control network it was amazing to see all the shades move in unison across the face of the tower. Even more amazing was the dramatic effect when the shades were fully opened on a sunny day. You could immediately feel the heat and glare pour into the space. With the shades down the operation became a cool and pleasant space in which to conduct the business of running one of the busiest airports in the world.

The neile level of comfort and efficiency is not just available to the aviation industry. We have installed similar shades in container port cranes with equally impressive results. Any project where superior solar heat gain and glare control is required would be a great candidate for our interior Mylar shades. As an added bonus the view is preserved with crystal clear clarity.
